The central London ice cream loop (cargo bike edition)
Look, we are not above bribing the children with ice cream. Some days the promise of a cone is the difference between a lovely family ride and a meltdown outside the Ritz. The good news: central London is absurdly good for gelato — and even better when you are on a cargo bike with a fridge-sized basket and a motor that flattens the hills.
This is our favourite ice cream loop from the GoZoom base near Mayfair. Nothing heroic. About 8–10 km of easy riding, mostly through parks, with three stops that never let us down.
Before you roll
- Timing: Weekday afternoons are bliss. Weekends get busy around Hyde Park Corner and South Kensington.
- Packing: One small bag, sun cream, a water bottle, and wet wipes (non-negotiable after stop two).
- Honesty check: Our bikes carry up to two children comfortably. Ice cream for four adults on handlebars is not a plan.
Stop 1 — Gelateria 3Bis, Covent Garden
~15 minutes from Mayfair
Start here if everyone is already hungry — or save it for the return leg if you prefer green space first. 3Bis does proper Italian gelato: pistachio that tastes like pistachio, not green air. The Covent Garden shop is small and popular, so expect a queue on sunny Saturdays.
Order: Dark chocolate and stracciatella. Trust us.

Through the parks — the bit where the bike earns its keep
From Covent Garden, cut up through St Giles and into Green Park, then straight through Hyde Park on the broad paths near the Serpentine. This is the joy of a cargo bike: the kids watch the pedalos, you actually enjoy the ride, and nobody asks to be carried after 400 metres.
If the weather is perfect, pause on the grass near the Lido. No ice cream required yet — just let them run about while you pretend you planned this level of calm.
Stop 2 — Oddono’s, South Kensington
~25 minutes through the park
Oddono’s on Thurloe Street is a firm family favourite. Rich flavours, friendly staff, and you are two minutes from the Natural History Museum if you want a wander afterwards (dinosaurs + gelato = excellent parenting).
Order: Venezuelan chocolate and mango sorbet. The sorbet buys you virtue points before stop three.
Stop 3 — Snowflake, Selfridges (or Mayfair)
~20 minutes back north
For the final stop, Snowflake at Selfridges Food Hall is ridiculous in the best way — saffron, honeycomb, flavours you did not know you needed. If the Food Hall feels too much after a long ride, their Mayfair branch is a gentler finish closer to home.
Order: Whatever the staff recommends. You have earned it.
The loop at a glance
| Leg | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gelateria 3Bis, Covent Garden | Opening salvo |
| 2 | Green Park → Hyde Park | Proper London riding |
| 3 | Oddono’s, South Kensington | The main event |
| 4 | Snowflake, Mayfair / Selfridges | Victory lap |
Total riding time: roughly 45–60 minutes, plus ice cream diplomacy.
A few honest tips
- Bring a napkin strategy. Gelato and cargo bikes are a beautiful but sticky combination.
- Bookend with toilets at South Kensington station or the museums — future you will be grateful.
- Do not rush. This route works because it is slow. The point is the meander, not the mileage.
